Best Night Training Tips: How to Use Lil Learnerz for Overnight Potty Training Protection

What Stage of Night Training is Best for Using Lil Learnerz?

Answer:

Lil Learnerz are ideal for the later stages of night training, when children are starting to wake up before accidents or experiencing only minor leaks. With their waterproof exterior and two-layer microfiber core, they offer protection without the bulk of cloth diapers, making them a great choice for toddlers graduating from Rumparooz cloth diapers to dry nights.

Understanding the Stages of Night Training

Nighttime potty training can be a challenging phase for many parents. If your child is fully potty trained during the day but still has accidents at night, finding a reliable, reusable overnight solution is key to avoiding frequent sheet changes. At Kanga Care, we recommend our Lil Learnerz training pants for certain stages of night training.

Here’s how to determine when Lil Learnerz are the right fit for your child’s night training journey, and why they may not be suitable in every phase.

Stage 1: Heavy Wetting and Sleeping Through

In the first stage of night training, your toddler may still wet multiple times throughout the night, often sleeping through the accidents. At this stage, they are not yet responding to their body’s signals to wake up and use the bathroom. If your child is waking up soaked in the morning, Lil Learnerz may not be the best option. For this phase, a more absorbent diaper will provide the necessary protection against leaks. If you do opt for trying out Lil Learnerz at this stage, make sure you are using the NEW Lil Learnerz 2.0 which has been redesigned with additional features like an interior pocket for adding additional soaker pads for boosting absorbency over night and for the early stages of potty training.

Stage 2: Waking Once or Wetting Just Before Morning

In the second stage, you might find that you need to wake your child once or twice during the night to pee, once when you go to bed (after they have gone to bed earlier) and then maybe again later in the night/early morning. This can look different for every family and is just an example of one method for night training. In the second stage it could also be that your child is dry all night, but wetting just before they wake in the morning. This transitional period is when they are starting to learn and recognize their body’s signals but are still prone to accidents.

In the early part of Stage 2, you may want to continue with a Rumparooz G3 One Size cloth diaper for nighttime. However, as your child progresses into a "wake-up a pee" routine, and has fewer accidents, you can gradually introduce Lil Learnerz. These training pants are designed with a waterproof exterior to prevent leaks, making them a good choice for when your toddler has small accidents late in the night or early morning.

Tip From Mom Of Five: Toddlers often pee just before waking up. If this is the final stage you and your little one are tackling, try waking them up 30 minutes earlier in the morning. You may catch them just before their "morning pee"!

"When I figured out this trick, it just so happened to work with each of my children and was our final stage to sealing the deal on night training." - Owner, Julie Ekstrom

Stage 3: Almost Dry Nights

By the time your child reaches the third stage of night training, they are usually making it through the night and typically waking up because they recognize the urge to pee, getting up to use the bathroom on their own.. This is where Lil Learnerz training pants shine. They offer a comfortable, underwear-like feel while providing protection from minor nighttime accidents. As your little one learns to respond to their body’s signals, Lil Learnerz ensure that if they don’t quite make it in time, there won’t be any mess. With a two-layer microfiber core and a waterproof outer layer, they are perfect for managing light leaks without compromising your child’s growing independence.

Why Choose Lil Learnerz for Potty Training?

  • Leak Resistant Exterrior: The waterproof outer layer prevents leaks from soaking straight through onto clothing, floors, car seats, bedding, making Lil Learnerz perfect for light accidents.
  • Transitioning from Rumparooz Cloth Diapers: Designed to feel like underwear, Lil Learnerz help toddlers move away from diapers, promoting independence while still offering protection.
  • Absorbent Core: The two-layer microfiber core quickly absorbs small accidents, reducing the need for frequent clothing or sheet changes.
  • Pocket Interior: The pocket opening inside the Lil Learnerz 2.0 (not featured in the original style) allows you to adjust the absorbency of the Lil Leanerz for naps, overnight, early potty training, or whatever situation may require additional absorbency in the training pants. Similar to a pocket diaper, just slide in a reusable or disposable soaker pad - or even just a folded wash cloth to boost absorbency.
  • ImWet Technology: The Lil Learnerz have exclusive "wet feeling" technology built into the training pants so your toddler feels wet when they have had an accident, aiding in the process of learning body cues and becoming self aware of bodily functions.
  • Reusable and Eco-Friendly: As a reusable alternative to disposable pull-ups, Lil Learnerz are an eco-friendly choice that helps reduce waste while providing reliable nighttime protection.

When Lil Learnerz May Not Be Enough

It’s important to note that while the NEW Lil Learnerz 2.0 do feature an interior pocket for adding additional soakers and customizing the absorbency, they are not as absorbent as a full diaper. If your child is still wetting heavily throughout the night without waking up, they may need the added absorbency of a diaper for overnight, like the Rumparooz G3 One Size, for now. Although Lil Learnerz training pants are fully waterproof with customizable absorbency, they are most effective for children who are showing signs of potty training readiness and vocalizing they recognize these body queues.

Can I Add Absorbency to the Training Pants?

Yes! The following are great solutions for boosting absorbency in the pocket of the Lil Learnerz 2.0! These options can also be used in the Original Lil Learnerz - however, as there is no pocket, the added absorbency would simply be laid in the center of the training pants.

  1. Newborn Cloth Diaper Inserts: The Bamboo or Hemp Newborn insert from our 6r Soaker pack is perfectly contoured with an hourglass shape, making it an excellent choice for boosting absorbency without adding bulk. It fits snugly in the wet zone and avoids bunching, just like most newborn inserts, which are typically narrower than full-size options. Our most requested and popular option is the Newborn Microfiber 10-pk.

  2. Tri-Folded Washcloths: A simple, budget-friendly alternative is a tri-folded washcloth. Depending on the material, a washcloth can provide even more absorbency than a newborn insert while remaining trim and effective.

  3. GroVia BioSoakers: For the most significant absorbency boost, the GroVia BioSoaker Inserts may be a good solution for you. They can be tucked in around the legs (if needed, based on the size of the Lil Learnerz) and offer absorbency levels comparable to a diaper.

Finding the Right Night Training Solution

Night training takes time, and each child progresses at their own pace. If your toddler is still having regular nighttime accidents, some of our Lil Learnerz absorbency boosting solutions may be helpful, or you may need to stick with diapers for a bit longer. However, if they are waking up to pee or having only light accidents, Lil Learnerz training pants can provide the perfect blend of protection and comfort as they transition to dry nights.

For parents seeking a that little extra help in an overnight solution, Lil Learnerz can offer that back-up protection without the mess. Want more tips or advice on night training or selection the correct size? Don’t hesitate to reach out - we’re here to help!

  • My biggest tip is: if you feel like things were working, but you hit a wall and seem to be progressing backwards, stop, take a breather, and try again in a few weeks! It could be a milestone in your LOs life causing a regression, or maybe they aren’t quite as ready as you thought. It’s a journey, not a race!
