Both TPU and PUL consists of a polyester base fabric with a thin film of polyurethane laminated onto it. This lamination process creates a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from leaking out of the diaper. TPU has the added benefit of breathability which allows the cloth diaper to contain wetness while still allowing air circulation, reducing the risk of diaper rash, and maintaining the comfort of the baby. Difference between TPU and PUL:

The biggest difference between TPU and PUL is the method in which each is manufactured.

TPU Manufacturing Process:

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) film is thin and transparent. This film is then applied to a base fabric, like polyester, to create the waterproof TPU fabric as used in cloth diapers and covers. The TPU film and base fabric are bonded to each other after being passed through heated rollers or a lamination machine. This process applies heat and pressure to melt the TPU film. The melted TPU adheres to the base fabric, creating a permanent bond. The resulting TPU fabric possesses excellent waterproofing properties due to the impermeable nature of TPU. It forms a protective barrier that prevents liquid penetration while still allowing breathability and flexibility in the fabric.

PUL Manufacturing Process:

PUL (polyurethane laminate) film is also thin and transparent. However, instead of using heat and pressure to bond the laminate to the base fabric, the manufacturing process of PUL uses pressure, solvents, and other chemicals to coat the base fabric and create the bond. The resulting PUL fabric also possesses excellent waterproofing properties although is not as breathable as TPU. There is much debate about the continued use of PUL as the solvents used in this process have harmful effects on the environment and human health.
