How to Use Cloth Diaper Covers

Wash your diaper covers at least once before you start using them. Using a diaper cover with an absorbent of your choice is straightforward.

Here is how you use a cloth diaper cover with various absorbents:

• Flat cloth diapers: Fold the flat into a shape that maximizes its absorbent abilities. Some folds can maximize the absorbency based on the gender and age of your baby. Folding a flat cloth diaper requires the most amount folding to obtain the desired diaper shape to fasten around baby, which can be secured with pins or snappis.
  Alternatively, fold the flat into a rectangle that is narrow and short enough to fit within the the leg elastics of the cover. This is called a “pad fold”. Place the flat diaper directly into the cover and wrap onto baby without the need of pins or snappis.

• Prefolds: Prefold diapers require a little less folding than flats, because essentially, they are flat diapers that have already been “pre-folded” and sewn into a useful shape. At this point a prefold requires just a couple more folds to be fitted snugly onto baby and fastened into place with either pins or a snappi. Once the prefold is in place, wrap the diaper cover on, taking care the prefold is completely tucked inside the cover.
  Alternatively, a prefold can also be “pad folded” and laid directly in the cover. To do this, simply fold the prefold into thrids, lengthwise. Place the prefold diaper directly into the cover and wrap onto baby without the need of pins or snappis.

• Inserts: Use these with covers like you do the pad-fold prefolds and flats.

Do You Need Liners When You Use Cloth Diaper Covers?

You do not always need a liner when using cloth diaper covers, but they are sometimes necessary. Apart from helping you contain the mess, liners have numerous benefits.
Liners are helpful for the following purposes:

• Liners protect your baby’s skin from the diaper’s abrasiveness, whose discomfort may be made worse when the diaper is wet. Also, some absorbent fabrics, mainly microfibers, are sensitive to the baby’s skin, and you must use a liner as a protector.
