How to Use Cloth Diaper Covers

How to Use Cloth Diaper Covers

Cloth diaper covers give you control over the type of absorbency you can expect for your baby. They are also convenient since they are easy to clean and dry faster than other diapers. Moreover, cloth diapers are some of the most affordable diapering options.

You can use cloth diapers with inserts or any reusable cloth diaper. However, using diaper covers with cloth diapers requires a bit of skill, especially for first-time parents. Keep reading and get informed about cloth diaper covers!

What Are Cloth Diaper Covers?

Cloth diaper covers are a waterproofing accessory to flats, prefolds, fitted diapers, and inserts. Diaper covers consist of wraps made of waterproofing material. The most common form is Polyurethane Laminate (PUL), bonded to polyester fabric using solvents and chemicals. Around the edges is an elastic band intended to contain any messes. Other companies make diaper covers of waterproof nylon, vinyl, and fleece.

Kanga Care’s Rumparooz cloth diaper covers are made with water-resistant TPU (or thermoplastic polyurethane) bonded over the fabric using heat rather than chemicals to reduce its toxicity. They are fastened around baby using snaps.

There are two styles of cloth diaper covers:

  • Wraps: They have snap closures or Velcro in the front; these options can be used with traditional flats, prefolds, and fitteds but they also have the flexibility to lay a soaker or pad-folded prefold directly into the cover, flat, without having to use a snappi or pins to secure the diaper around baby.
  • Pull-on covers: For this option, you have to fasten the diapers to the baby before the pull-on. They can be used with various diapers, such as prefolds and fitted cloth diapers.

What Sizes Do Cloth Diaper Covers Come In?

Cloth diaper covers come in premature, newborn, small, medium, large, and extra-large. Some diaper covers come in newborn size and one size. Rumparooz cloth diaper covers also come in those two sizes.

However, the Rumparooz newborn and preemie size covers are adjustable in three different sizes using the series of snaps on the front. With these adjustments, the newborn covers will cover babies weighing between four pounds and 15 pounds, which is preterm to slightly larger than normal newborns.

You can also adjust one-size Rumparooz diaper covers in four sizes that grow with your baby from the time they are six pounds to 35 pounds.

How to Use Cloth Diaper Covers

Wash your diaper covers at least once before you start using them. Using a diaper cover with an absorbent of your choice is straightforward.

Here is how you use a cloth diaper cover with various absorbents:

  • Flat cloth diapers: Fold the flat into a shape that maximizes its absorbent abilities. Some folds can maximize the absorbency based on the gender and age of your baby. Folding a flat cloth diaper requires the most amount folding to obtain the desired diaper shape to fasten around baby, which can be secured with pins or snappis.
Alternatively, fold the flat into a rectangle that is narrow and short enough to fit within the the leg elastics of the cover. This is called a “pad fold”. Place the flat diaper directly into the cover and wrap onto baby without the need of pins or snappis.
  • Prefolds: Prefold diapers require a little less folding than flats, because essentially, they are flat diapers that have already been “pre-folded” and sewn into a useful shape. At this point a prefold requires just a couple more folds to be fitted snugly onto baby and fastened into place with either pins or a snappi. Once the prefold is in place, wrap the diaper cover on, taking care the prefold is completely tucked inside the cover.
Alternatively, a prefold can also be “pad folded” and laid directly in the cover. To do this, simply fold the prefold into thrids, lengthwise. Place the prefold diaper directly into the cover and wrap onto baby without the need of pins or snappis.
  • Ecoposh fitted cloth diapers: Put them on the child in the usual way and put the cover on top of it.
  • Inserts: Use these with covers like you do the pad-fold prefolds and flats.

Do You Need Liners When You Use Cloth Diaper Covers?

You do not always need a liner when using cloth diaper covers, but they are sometimes necessary. Apart from helping you contain the mess, liners have numerous benefits.
Liners are helpful for the following purposes:

  • Liners protect your baby’s skin from the diaper’s abrasiveness, whose discomfort may be made worse when the diaper is wet. Also, some absorbent fabrics, mainly microfibers, are sensitive to the baby’s skin, and you must use a liner as a protector.
  • Liners protect diapers from the notoriously hard-to-wash meconium and stool.

What Else Do You Need When You Use Cloth Diaper Covers?

Here are a few more things you may need to use cloth diaper covers conveniently:

  • Changing pads- you may need these, especially on the go, when you are uncertain about the surface on which you are changing your baby. You can buy these individually from Kanga Care or as a diaper package.
  • Snappi- Kanga Care Diaper Fasteners to fasten the flats or prefolds.
  • Wet bags to store your dirty diapers at home or on the go.

How Frequently Do You Need to Change Your Cloth Diaper Covers?

Unlike all-in-ones or pocket diapers, you can use cloth diaper covers multiple times before changing them. Just wipe them down with a rag; they are good to use. However, you must change them if they become soiled and only use them again after cleaning them.

Cloth diaper covers are one of the most affordable and versatile cloth diapering solution, and you should explore them, especially if you are on a tight budget. Purchase One Size Cloth Diaper Covers or Newborn Cloth Diaper Covers today, and keep your child’s clothing dry.
